Couple of Questions - Probably first of many!

Finally for 60D yesterday but not had much time to explore so far.

    Anyway couple of questions:

    1. colour space - 2 options sRGB and Adobe RGB, if I'm reading correctly the choice here would depend on desired output. In practice is anyone using either of these in preference?

    2. Something that will divide option I'm sure - non OEM batteries. Anyone using? And any recommendations or is it best to stick with originals?

Hello! Tony. I am unable to answer Q.1 but with re Q2 I do buy from the 7day shop third party/non OEM batteries and they are excellent. They are also much cheaper. I am sure other members will also have their opinions on this matter and will comment accordingly.

      Tony,
I think you will find a majority here use sRGB and they will come back with the technical plus and minus of why they do.

Hi Nat, thanks for reply did a quick Google and there are plenty. One thing that is noticeable some are reduced capacity, lowest I saw was 1400mA.

Colour space - sRGB tends to be standard for web display and most of us default to that (I suspect) - adobe '98 provides a much greater range and depth of colour and tends to be that mandated by most print houses, but does demand a bit more processing 'grunt'. If you stick with sRGB you'll be fine

Yep inference of what I read was the AbodeRGB was prefered option when 'printing'. Guess you're right that most will stick with sRGB.

Re: Couple of Questions - Probably first of many!

There's a lot of divided opinion on colour-space, but the general opinion is that whilst AdobeRGB can yield a much wider gamut, in practice it actually desaturates colours and leads to dull and lifeless images (unless you have set up appropriate colour profiles which are distributed with the image and they're used in the reproduction process). Stick with sRGB!

I use a LP-E6 clone battery from Ultimate Battery (£15.99), it's rated at 2,100mAh as opposed to the 1,800mAh of the Canon battery but I'm not convinced it's actually any better (or worse) than the original. My camera reports that the clone-battery pack recharge performance has deteriorated, but again I've not noticed any difference. I've also used clone battery packs on my 450D in the past, and their performance was on a par with the canon pack.

I'd tend to steer clear of the very cheap battery packs, but the mid-priced ones seem to give a similar performance to the branded item in my experience.

                Hello Tony

I am with the majority here:

SRGB colour space and no problem with 3rd party batteries.

Thanks everyone. Third party batts and sRGB it is.

Got to say nice friendly forum.

                    1) sRGB [although I suspect you'll not notice much difference in day-to-day us if you did set AdobeRGB ... except filenames start with an underscore on most (all?) Canon DSLRs, G-series (and others?)].

                    2) Clones (from a decent seller) are okay. I've used them as reserve batteries for ages and have sometimes had to deploy them without incident.

Another vote for sRGB, this was a recommendation from my college course, but I have no experience of third party batteries, as I always use genuine, when I can afford too.

The other battery option of course is a battery-grip and rechargeable AA cells. Using high-power LiMH batteries you can get 2,800mAh, or with Hybrid batteries 2,100mAh, of course you don't get the benefit of having two packs installed and six decent AA's won't be a lot cheaper than a clone pack, but they're ideal in an emergency.

Indeed there are, but (as with most things in life) try to avoid the very cheap ones, and ideally try before you buy.

I bought an third-party Opteka grip for my 450D which I was extremely pleased with, it was (allegedly) fabricated in the same plant, using the same moulds, as the official Canon grip. For my 60D I bought another third-party grip which was nowhere near the same quality, despite looking almost indistinguishable from the Canon branded product. I've since upgraded to the official branded product which is a joy to hold and use.

You can get a LP-E6 battery from "Premier Ink" for £20.00! I have two non-Canon spares and no problems with them ( 5D Mk II & 60D both use LP-E6) - which is what I use; 7D also uses same.
