      What I notice is that newbies and some amateurs usually go for pictures with shallow depth of field, the more out of focus background the better. Why is that I wonder?
      Older post but good question, very interesting, shame you're not posting so much

      Speaking for myself, it's because it's easier, and blowing BGs out is one of the first tricks I learned.
      People couldn't do with your average P+S camera, and people were sometimes impressed by the effect.

      With everything in the frame sharp, you have to think alot more about compostion especially if you wanted the viewer to focus on a particular element of the pic.
