    Re: Insurance

As a retired Chartered Insurer I've been watching this thread with some interest. My advice would be that everyone's situation is different and if you have any doubts then speak to your insurer. Unfortunately many insurance contracts nowadays are of the 'package' type and handled by Call Centre operatives whose knowledge and experience is limited with constant referrals to underwriters. There are of course exceptions but they seem to be getting fewer.

As Robert says - any mention of earnings from our hobby will often produce immediate negative responses rather than questions and a discussion. There is far too much - 'we can't do that' rather than 'let's see how we can help'.

My advice for everyday hobbyists would be to read your policy (which avoids mis-understandings & surprises in the event of a claim), check with your Household Insurer, be specific as to what YOU want and don't be put off by immediate refusals because you 'don't fit the box'. Those earning should seek a specialist insurer such as EOS Insurance. If you are at all unsure then speak to an Insurance Broker who will use their expertise to make sure YOU get the Cover YOU want.

I would say this wouldn't I, but Household & Personal Possessions Insurance is not complicated, insurers are not trying to be uncooperative - like everything else in life there are some bad & some good.

    Rant over!

      Re: Insurance

As previously mentioned my camera equipment is covered by my home contents insurance.
My camera gear is covered to £7000 (even if stolen from a locked car) and any item valued at over £2000 is listed separately.
I do not own any one item valued at over £2000.
As long as invoices or proof of ownership are produced then the policy is covered new for old.
If the same item is more expensive or discontinued then it will give the cash equivalent.
My photographic gear is listed separately on the policy but only as a total amount.
My whole policy (home content + camera gear) is costing me less than £18.00 a month.
Specialist photographic insurers will charge much more than that just for the camera gear.

As an amateur/hobbyist this is perfect for me.
If I was a professional then I would seriously consider an alternative.
