    Classic still life.

    Hi all.

This was taken in the kitchen at home. The intention was to try and produce a monochrome image with a large range of tones, just to see what I could squeeze out of the camera using all of its dynamic range.

With that in mind, the lights were adjusted so that the pure blacks and whites fell within the range that the camera could record. The readings were taken using a hand held incident flash meter.

1/125s @ f16. Canon 1Ds2 with TSE-90mm. 2 studio flash units with soft boxes. The final image was converted to mono with Silver Effex pro from within Lightroom.

Beautifully arranged and lit, but I am not sure about the old pewter jug. It is so interesting in its own right it should be there, but I feel it upsets the balance of the rest of the shot.

I like that. You've captured the subject and tones beautifully.

I like the image too BUT I am with Colin C the jug does not fit with the rest of the shot.

If it were mine I would spread the content's to fill the frame and place the jug off center at the back, possibly lift it a little? I would also place all content's on the back of an old antique type drawer that is made up with slats! The tones are really beautiful. Then I would print and frame it and hang it in my kitchen.

Hi Scuff, I think that you have done an excellent job in bringing out the tonal range of the image. You have received sone excellent critique on the composition, the only thing I would of changed is replacing the jug with either a glass decanter or wine glass, partially filled with wine.

I agree with Tom on the wine glass, i thought the same after my previous post. Good excuse to have a drink after all your efforts.

I guess we will have different ideas on the actual content of a still life like this, but in my opinion you have done extremely well in both content and presentation. Wonderful range of tones from a great conversion. Very well done !!

Makes a beautiful photo. Now because I don't have a pewter jug I'd put an apple maybe cut in two.

Just mentally going through the contents of the cupboards to see if I can have a go at something like this.... because I know its not going to look half as good with a tin of pineapple chunks on a tuppaware dish.

This not the sort of thing I do but I can appreciate a good photograph like this.
