Yes - it is a real rainbow.

This image was taken at Derwent Water as the rain rolled in. I was so engrossed in watching the scene develop that I nearly forgot to take the picture.
Although it has had excellent results in competitions, one thing really bugs me. Judges often state that they cannot decide whether the rainbow was real or 'photoshopped' in. Grrrrr.
    Anyway hope you like it

I do like it, a lot! I'd like to know how you processed this?

I have to say that there wasn't much PP for this shot. It really looked like this. The camera was tripod mounted and the composition set. I just took plenty of images as the rain rolled in.
I shot with cloudy white balance so my shots didn't vary from frame to frame and the camera didn't try to add 'blue' to the stormy scene. Shot on Manual to hold the 'right exposure' as opposed to the 'correct exposure'. The lens was tilted forward 1.5 degrees.
Post processing was done purely in lightroom. A gentle grad was applied to the sky, and the colours in the rainbow were given a little saturation. A dark but subtle vignette was added to help contain the viewers eye.
      Hope that helps.

Thanks Scuff. I trust you'll be hanging this on a wall?

            Very lovely, Scuff.
Don't often see tilt and shift shots, but you make good use of your two. Just when I thought I had enough lenses for now.....

Re: Yes - it is a real rainbow.

It is a lovely shot and I would be pleased to have taken it.

Aren't Judges annoying? I know, I used to be one, but if I wasn't sure about something, I always gave the photographer the benefit of the doubt and said nothing.

With rainbows it is fairly cut and dried. There is nearly always a double rainbow, but often the second is very faint. In the primary rainbow, red will be the outer colour, going through to violet, but that will be reversed on the secondary rainbow, because light is being double reflected and hence the rainbow is the opposite. Also, between the two is the Alexander Band, which darkens the scene between the rainbows and outside of the secondary. If a body of water is involved, how the rainbows reflect in the water will also indicate whether it is natural, or manufactured.

For a Judge to state aloud that he is unsure whether it was real or photoshopped, is only volunteering his ignorance to the audience. Much better to have said nothing and appear to be wise.

Fabulous shot, definitely one to hang on the wall.

Thanks Colin for teaching me more about rainbows in one post than I've learned in my entire life ;-) I'd never noticed the second rainbow was reversed!
