Looking for a bit of critique.

    Hi guys,

I took these photo's a couple of weekends ago and am fairly happy with them, but I know they could have been better.
So in order to progress I'd like any constructive criticsm anybody would like to give.

They were all taken with the 40d and a 24-105.

    Thanks in anticipation.

    Andy

Re: Looking for a bit of critique.

Hi Andy, these are my initial thoughts on the images.

#1, I would be tempted to crop a little off the sky and also crop the bottom to just below the logs and make the image into more of a letterbox format, I would also be tempted to lighten the foreground and building a little and put a grad filter on the sky to slightly darken it.

#2, I would be inclined to take a little off the bottom and off the RHS to loose the open hole in the foliage to the right of the main tree, that would also tend to move the tree more onto the 1/3

#3, this image I would crop into a square format reducing the foreground to just below the tuft of grass in front of the larger log and then reduce the top to form a square format.

i hope this helps but they are only my thoughts and I am sure others will have different ideas.

Nice set of images and with Muscat's suggestions made them better.

Andy, I like the first image the most. The colours are very warming.

I entirely agree with Muscat, but for number 2, I would go back in better light in the early morning or late evening. The sun will be low in the sky and cast better shadows and modelling light.

Cheers Colin, all three are from the same morning. The deer sanctuary was first, then some time later the tree and then lastly the delightfully named slaughter house.
The next Sunday morning with a decent forecast will see me out again and I'll start the other way round.

Hi Jeff, I reckon there's a distinct improvement after Muscat's C&C, It's a shame the light wasn't on your side forthe House and tree, but the light on the Deer Sanctuary is quite lovely. I would be tempted to increase the foreground contrast a little more to give the effect of frosty crispness, but thats all. NIce work

Thanks Roger. I'll give that a go tonight.
                      It's all a learning curve!

What a great critique by Muscat on some pictures that were already good.
The revised shots are definitely improved, Andy, particularly the letterbox image in which the branch now leads the eye into the shot from the bottom right corner. Well done, nice shots.
