    Bulmer Bales

I may have mentioned that I'm a Postie and that I'm very lucky to work in an area that includes Castle Howard and two or three surrounding villages. I'd noticed these bales last week in Bulmer and I'd had a word with the farmer, mentioning that I'd like to pop down one evening to take some photos. On arrival at the farm, I was a little surprised to find that most of the bales had been neatly re-arranged, but I found an angle that I thought might produce a reasonable result.

Also this evening, I'd got back in touch with the lady who was advertising some Lee soft grad filters a while back. Those who'd seen my earlier 'filter' post, might recall that the filters had bleached a little and lost some graduation. Anyway, I'd decided to give them another go for this sunset photo.

I'm not sure if I should have added more saturation, what do you folks think?

Sorry Andy, but for me the colors are a bit muted, your eye wants to go up the field, but keeps being drawn into the sun and the horizon seems to have a slight tilt from right to left, IMO.

I've added another quick edit. The field is on a slope and I'd checked the tripod's spirit level at the time. It's getting late, so I'll leave it for now.

Cheers Tom. I guess the filters reduce the light and colour and I may need to compensate for that. Also, editing late at night in a darkened room may not help. :-)

I've added a final edit, which I feel happier with. I used the clarity slider in ACR and I think it's given it less of a dull look.

I like the perspective. Agreed with Tom, now the 2nd is definitely warmer and has more gloss to it. The grads shouldn't reduce the impact of the colour, in my experience they tend to slightly enhance. Reading the Inspiring Professional books by Lee Filters it seems some kind of warm-up filter would be used to enhance the colours in the foreground, which is what you have done in ACR I'm guessing.

Thanks for commenting Tom. I feel that the 2nd image is a bit too green/orange for my taste, I've tried different things in PS, but I'm not much of a PS editor. The last image looks more natural to me, at least colour wise. I guess it'll appear slightly different to each of us depending on our monitors.

The final edit is very like a scene from Man of Steel if you have seen the film. If you like it then it's a start :) I liked the warmer toned one however you know what I'm like with landscapes. The more colours the better lol

Second edit for me Andy, it has the needed warmth the others are lacking, and in the last, with the best will in the world you never see blue sky as dark as the sky top left.

The third for me looks processed, whereas the second doesn't.

A good composition also, all the elements coming together very well, I'd consider cloning that bale you have cut in half mid left, and you have a slight CA (red/green fringing) along your left contrast line-but no biggy.

I've had another go at it, any better?
