Red Knots at Nudgee Beach, QLD

This little wader is called a Red Knot - the wind was blowing a gale and so I gave up after a couple of shots

Lovely sharp images Andy but can't understand why they are called "red" knots!

Thanks guys - I posted it mainly because I liked the background and the wedge of in focus DOF. It was a full crop even at 520mm and despite the gale.

Bill, they're apparently called red knots because they change to that colour during breeding and Stan, you're spot on - a google search tells me that the latin name for the dunlin is Calidris alpine and the Red Knot is Calidris canutus, so well done indeed!

they are very similar with the knot being slightly bigger.

the dunlin has a bit of red too but nowhere near as much as the knot
