Super Paul ,the 1.4 works well with the rig just ensure you get the centre point near the eye.i was so hoping the tamron lens was the answer but it's not .:-0(

Yeah we got the license through on Friday. They rushed it through to us. Stevie, my mate, has photographed the Peregrines that live in Glasgow on the nest before so it was a sure deal for us with the kingys.

The Tamron is a reach monster but I've not seen many pics I've been happy with. A 400 2.8 and 1.4x TC. that's the way to go :) I can see myself with that.

Some more excellent kingfisher images Paul.

Black fox has mentioned that a 1.4 converter will only work on the centre AF point as you'll be working at f8. Be sure to check the focus speed as a converter can dramatically reduce it. You may be better off cropping instead. That's why I sold my 2x converter with my 500mm f4, the focusing was too slow.

Cheers Brian. Not sure I'll bother. It fits my needs well about 90% of the time. There's a severe gap in canons lenses though. After a 400 prime it just gets ridiculous for price after that. If they made a 400mm f/4 with a 1.4x TC in built that would be the lens to have.

            Or just a 400 f4 would suit me, as i already have a 1.4x

They make a 400mm f4 DO IS lens, which I bought several years ago for my partner, Christine. It works very well, especially with a 1.4 converter, but even that is well over £5,000.00!

Some more excellent images Paul. Know what you mean about the weather has been grey and misty locally since I returned after a few days in Rome (20+ C and blue skies) which has meant can hardly see kestrels never mind photograph them.
