    Great Tit - DOF test

Today I went down to my fave wee spot in the park. I went out with some oats and set about putting them on a tree trunk with an over hanging branch. Theory is to have them perched on the branch. Not so for this Great tit who decides to land on the fence next to me.

Luckily I was pre-focussed at 2m and he just so managed to be in that range on the fence. No idea, I snapped him looking at me. He then jumps onto the next post closer to me and I snapped away. He was looking away so it's not a terribly good shot. Luckily for me, he popped just outside 1.4m closest focus.

Both shots are at f8 but it was interesting to note that the closer the subject the shallower the DOF was.

I think I have a wee back focus issue with the lens but it's interesting that trying to get them closer to fill the frame isn't always a good plan.

Lovely image Paul, I bought a used 300 2.8 last year and did some DOF test with clothes pegs on a line and was not impressed so I went on the web to find a DOF calculator and it is quite shocking at the DOF or lack of it .

The calculator lets you enter Body Lens Aperture and distance to subject, if you already know this disregard this reply, still like the lens though

Got to say Paul, looks to be plenty of detail in the images.

Wouldn't like to say there is any specific issue with the focus as subject is very close and DOF isn't going to be massive with 200mm even at f8.

The first is lovely and a nice pose. Whilst the second is nice it looks wrong to me without the tail.

I still can't believe how sharp this 70-200 2.8 is. I don't know why folk go for the much more expensive mkII. I get to use it on the 5D3 tomorrow so here's hoping for a good game.

It's the IS Mk1 I have. As you know I've had the Mk2. I don't notice any difference.

Seem to recall IQ was better for MkII thought not masses. Wait till you get older and you'll appreciate IS☺

Remember many years ago being able to handhold my 600mm lens at quite low shutter speeds.

Just reread Photozone review of MkII and seems compared to MkI there was big difference.

Guessing that these are rather critical differences and MkI was no mean performer.

works for me :) Plus I needed to fund the 300 2.8 and 1D IV so something had to give :) I got the 70-200 for 599 too. No brainer for me really.

Excellent shots with a creamy bokeh , first for me as the feet are OOF in the second.
