The shots do show just how bad the light was and I guess the shutter speed was quite slow as some are looking a bit soft but I bet it was great just to see the water rail out in the open like that

Canon 7D yada yada see FLICKR EXIF data for details
the exif shows volumes of information but none in respect of shutter speed, aperture ISO or lens

Look good set of images especially considering conditions.

Just wonder about common gull ident. Looks a bit chunky and white on wing tip not quite as much as I would expect. The spot on the beak also looks to be red/orange. Viewing on my mobile so might be wrong but my guess would be immature herring gull.

Yup. He / she just wanders about quite oblivious of the 'toggers looking on. Has been there for several years now, always on its own.

Sorry, it looks like I ticked the wrong box on the Save Foir Web dialogue. I have added info to the original post.

Yup. Incorrect ID by me. Tired, is my only excuse. Corrected.

No problem, like warblers gulls can be mixed up especially when immature.

Just wondering if you were using auto ISO. Some very low ISOs selected for moving creatures in poor light conditions, which seems unusual.
Like the water rail. Not seen one yet this year.
Trying to be constructive, not critical.

The 7D is set up to allow a maximum of ISO 1600, which, to be fair, is pretty damn noisy. Using DPP instead of ACR gets a bit better noise processing but at the cost of an extra step in the workflow. Where possible I used walls etc (no tripod with me) to steady the camera so that I could slow the exposure and get a better ISO.
