    The Weed Dance.....

.....but without the weeds. We watched this pair of great crested grebes engaging in the courtship ritual in various parts of the lake at Blashford for around an hour yesterday and preceeding each display the male dived and came up with a beakfull of weed but in each case dropped it before he got to the female. At one point she must have got fed up with this as she climbed out of the water, lie down and went to sleep It was quite amusing to watch the male keep coming over to her to try and grab her attention with a mouthful of weed.

    Lovely!

Despite all the years I've been birding, I've never seen GCGs displaying mating behaviour!

Thanks for looking David and Chris

we were lucky enough to witness it last year at Barnes, full frame right in front of the hide - yesterdays were a little further away but seemed to go on forever

Despite what I said , it would appear that on one occasion they did dance with a weed - I didn't see it but this is one I just processed from Dee - bit smaller in the frame as she only had the 420mm reach

Very nice Stan. I've seen them do the head bobbing. Is that part of the weed dance? Around here, unfortunately, we seem to go from an adult pair to an adult pair with chicks without seeing the dance in between...

we were very lucky I think, there are a lot of grebes on the Blashford Lakes but this is the first time of seeing the dance there
