    Swan Take-off

    Hi,

Out at the weekend trying out BIF shots with my new 70D - best of the bunch.

Not yet convinced at the quality of picture at high ISO over my old 40D!!! This was taken at ISO800 - does it look noisy to you or am I just pixel peeping?

It might be a little noisy in the background but probably easily corrected. The swan is well exposed though with great feather detail so this is very much the centre of attention. Well taken.

Yes there is a hint of noise but nothing too worrying. Have you applied any noise reduction in PP or is this as shot? I always apply a certain amount of sharpening and noise reduction to my shots and always shot in RAW.

As Andrew has said, captured really well and perfectly framed in my view

        Alan, Andrew,

        Thank you for your comments.

There was a fair amount of mist around when this was taken so some PP including NR. Shot in RAW. Any pointers on how you apply Noise reduction in your work flow would be gratefully received. thanks

Typically nothing too strenuous Guy. Generally sharpen to around 50, image dependant of course. I would then apply around the same for NR. I always mask the background when sharpening so only the subject gets treated. This is assuming you use LR as I do?

I use a third party plug in to photoshop for NR (neat image) and apply the NR on a duplicate area, then mask out the areas I don't want to affect

I use LR and apply NR first before combining sharpening with masking.

I don't think the noise is intrusive but being ultra-picky it looks to me like the focus is on the near wing and the head is slightly out of the depth of field. Not by much, but enough to be slightly blurred.

                Still a cracking shot though

Nicely timed shot and good exposure so I'm not even going to look for any noise.

                      Andy,Ian, Stan,

                      Thanks for the comments.
Andy - you are right with the focus. I was experimenting with using centre point and the 'centre zone' (9points) - this was centre zone so it probably locked onto the nearest point - the wings. Thought the depth of field would be enough - but not for old eagle eye
                      Thanks

A very nice shot with very nice feather detail you could always pass off the noise in the background as fog.

I use nik effects plugin called dfine to reduce noise it works quite well
