It really was a matter of lucky timing. Here is another, from a different day, caught just a little too early and not quite as sharp

I remember seeing Brown Pelicans diving like this in Antigua, sometimes you can get 4 or 5 diving in synchrony but as you say they seem to make a sudden decision to dive and then it's all over.
