    Garden Goldfinch

I've managed to get the DSLR controller software working via WiFi connected to a TP-Link router. So I was able to setup the 7D2 close to the Niger seed feeder (sorry Stan) and although the light was awful I managed to get this shot:

What I need now is remote control of the tripod head!

that sounds like some remote set up, but is it soft or are my eyes totally off today?

The feeder is no problem Russell as you have not included it in the shot and you have proved the DSLR controller works, however as Ian says, the shot is actually a bit soft

        Re: Garden Goldfinch

Thanks for looking guys. I agree it's soft. I think there are four possible factor. 1) the light was awful so this was shot at f5.6, 1/100 sec. ISO 1,000 2) it was blowing a near gale 3) It's a massive crop 4) I'm coming round to the to the though that I can't put it off any longer and I need to work on micro adjustment of my lenses.

What do reckon is most important?

I'm no expert when it comes to long lenses but 1/100 at 480mm sounds to slow to me especially if it was blowing a gale, I think you had everything against you getting a sharp image

            Re: Garden Goldfinch

Could be any of the reasons you have mentioned, just checked with a depth of field calculator if your subject distance was 20ft with 420mm @5.6 it would be just over an inch, great effort in trying something different

              Re: Garden Goldfinch

theres a couple of things that come to mind ,1 a t.c will make a photo softer and will show up more at close range ,2 did you by any chance leave the i.s switched on ,3 the eye is actually in focus so i,m presuming the lack of d.o.f is caused by the closeness ,the closer you are the less it is .the one thing i would not do at this stage is throw M/A into the equation

                Re: Garden Goldfinch

Thanks for the feedback Jeff and Alan. You're both correct. The DOF was very shallow and yes I did leave IS on - deliberately in fact because I thought it might help with the wind - but I've re-read how IS works and now realise that was a dumb thing to do.

Ah well we learn from our mistakes. The birds are still around so I I'll try again.

                Thanks again all.
