There are several species of bug and beetle that develop in these heads of reedmace and often overwinter in them. I suspect this bird is searching for them. It could also just be pulling out the seeds to eat.EOS 6D, 6D Mk II, 80D, 70D, 100D, 200D, M50, M100.
