There have been goosanders, male and female, pretty much all winter on a lake not far from my home - about a 30 minute walk. Unfortunately, they have always been far too far away, or if not, they scoot off quickly if they spot anything close by. It's a place frequented by regular dog walkers and families and there is little or no cover so I've not managed to get any shots, let alone decent ones.
Today, I just went for a stroll across to the river Blackwater (5 minutes away) to stretch my legs and was pleased to see a female right on the river. I didn't have my camera with me but home was close enough for me to rush back and get it before either the bird moved on or the light went. She didn't stay for long after I got there so was pleased to get a decent shot.
