    Mammoth Wasp

The Mammoth Wasp (Megascolia maculata flavifrons) is truly of Mammoth size, this one was around 5 cms and one of many seen on the cliffs of the North coast of Crete. It is not carnivorous as are most wasps but feeds on flower nectar, the female is the larger with the orange head. It is truly an intimidating insect but a weak flyer and quite beautiful in it's own way.

              If that's 5cm long, that's almost life-size. Wow!

That's one huge insect - you are braver than I - you would see me running in the opposite direction - great capture (shudder at the thought)!
