    Spider v Wasp

I took these yesterday morning in the back garden. I appreciate they are not the greatest of quality but I thought I would post them and share on here. I took them with a 450d and the kit 18-55mm as I don't have a specialist macro lens.

        Hi Mark;

Well, if these were taken with an 18-55, your camera has a problem reading the lens! The EXIF data says these were shot at 259mm !

Outside of that, you've missed the focal point which is clearly on the wood (or metal) to the left... Try using centre-point only for focussing, instead of multi-point (which is what it looks like to me...). You'll have much greater control over where the camera focuses...

        Cheers...

Hi C-F, thanks for that, I hadn't noticed, I did change lenses but thought these were on the 18-55, I guess the early ones were on the longer Tamron, my mistake, as is the focussing point, I did change it to spot after, it was all a bit of a rush, saw the shot grabbed the camera and was leaning over a flower bed etc at time. I did thing they were all to light due to the strong sun. But I am open to C & C and only post here for help and advice, I know my shots and equipment don't measure up to a lot of folks on here but I try to do my best with the kit I have. But I must remember to check settings before I start lol
          Regards..

Interesting shots but I think the focussing is out of synch! I agree with CF. I have an 18mm-55mm IS and it takes far shaper images. on a 450d body. You might like to re-try and post your new images just to confirm that it is your focussing that was at fault. I also find that these so called "KIT" lenses are really very well made and are IMO far superior to the earlier EF USM lenses.

              Re: Spider v Wasp

It was set to multi point focus not the center point, I stupidly only realised after. As for re trying, the wasp was no more not long after lol

                Re: Spider v Wasp

                Useful tip for macro:

                * Set the focus to manual.
                * Roughly pre-focus and then rock forwards and backwards until the subject is perfectly focussed, then squeeze off a shot.
                * It sounds complicated, but once tried can be done very quickly.

The reason for this is that auto focus has a tolerance. It could actually be front focussing, or back focussing and the effect is magnified at shorther distances with smaller depth of fields, so you should obtain sharper pictures with manual focus.

                      Very nasty horrible creatures.

I was in a chinese restaurant with some friends and we were enjoying some honey glazed smoked chicken and a wasp was flying around trying to get his share. I said: " do you remember that Mr Myaggi on the Karate Kid that caught an annoying fly in his chopsticks? ..................... watch this!"

I flicked the chopsticks towards the wasp, fully expecting the ends of the sticks to click shut on nothing, the wasp to be three feet away and my friends laughing at my idiocy. But they didn't ........................ because trapped in between the tips of my chopsticks was the annoying wasp! They couldn't believe it and neither could I, it was a complete fluke!

But I kept my composure and to their open jawed expressions, I calmly smiled and said in a quiet voice: That's how you deal with an annoying Wasp!

Was it a wasp or a hoverfly? Did you count the wings before you condemmed it?

It had yellow and black stripes.

I was too surprised to check the actual genus.
