My first Peacocks of the year

More in hope than expectation I pointed my 70-300 LIS at this pair of Peacock Butterflies fluttering by at the Heronry yesterday. Clearly not up to "quality" standard but I was gob-smacked that it focus locked and got this amount of detail using single shot / AI servo mode. a crop of around 7% without resizing

Must start polishing the macro kit!

The 70-300L does af VERY quickly - which is how I caught that swallow

too right Brian, particulalrly with the 7D body. I got a Sand Martin as well yesterday so can see how you did the Swallow, but these things were tiny (I never managed it with my 300 f4LIS and I reckoned that to be one of the best for ths type of shot)

Am off to Leeds Castle on Saturday to get pictures of their bird display - am looking forward to more extensive use of the new lens. The birds are quite big there on the whole and you can get close so near full frame is a distict probability

Might try panning on the cranes

Do you find the sharpness and contrast very good on the 70-300L? It surprised me how close it was to the 135f2 in that respect

I look forward to seeing the results from Leeds Castle Brian, one of my favourite places (but a bit far to get there frequently)

I find the sharpness and contrast to be superb (on a par with or even better than my 70-200 F4LIS and 300 F4LIS) but it is just a tad lacking in Bokeh compared with those two.

My wife remarked today that since I've had it she hasn't heard my usual bleat "I've got the wrong lens on"

The bokeh from the 135f2 at 2.8 is superb - cant expect the same from the 70-300 at 5.6 (nor the 100-400 that was replaced)
