    Sigma 10mm-20mm vs Canon 10mm-22mm

I note that some members are selling their Sigma 10-20mm lens in preference to the Canon 10-22mm lens, although the Sigma produces very stunning pics. As a Sigma owner, I would like to know the reason why some members prefer the Canon to the Sigma super wide. Perhaps Graydon might like to lead the field with his thoughts and rationale as I note he is selling his Sigma via the Classified ads section.

    Many thanks.

    Nathaniel,

    RATIONALE

I’m flattered you think there was some rationale behind my decision!

Seriously, I saw an opportunity to buy a lens I had been after at a reasonable price and I took it.

I considered 4 lenses when I came across to canon to replace my Olympus Zuiko 9-18mm. These were as follows.
    • My Sigma 10-20mm f4-5.6 EX DC HSM that I am selling - £429
    • The Sigma 10-20mm F3.5 EX DC HSM - £459
    • The Sigma 8-16mm f4.5-5.6 DC HSM £520
    • Or the Canon EF-S 10-22mm f3.5-4.5 USM - £655

(Prices as at 22-05-2012 Warehouse Express)

After a little research I went for the Sigma 10-20mm f4-5.6 EX DC HSM @£429. It has been brilliant.

I was thinking of moving to full frame because I had found I am really enjoying landscapes but after seeing the cost of the 5D3 I have decided not to move this year; I may even see what 7D replacement comes along.

So I decided to buy some different lenses with the little savings I have in my gadget fund. I wanted a macro lens to replace the Tamron 70-300 which really isn’t a macro lens and, because I have found I enjoy landscapes, I thought I may try the more valuable Canon.

I did a similar exercise last year replacing my EF-s 70-300mm IS USM with the new L version.

    COMPARISON

Well we’ll have to wait and see. I’m sure I will have fun doing this.

A word of caution: Where I have been comfortable sharing my thoughts and reasoning, I would like to think we are not setting a precedent which sees everyone justifying their personal choices. I also have no wish to further explain my actions … This post has just been to satisfy Nathaniel's curiousity and reassure him that the Sigma 10-20mm is a great lens :)

I hope it has been of help.

Re: Sigma 10mm-20mm vs Canon 10mm-22mm

Thank you Graydon. I appreciate very much your frankness. This information is only for my personal use. I may be in your position in the near future with a Canon 10-22 lens coming into my possession at a very reasonable price. However, I am very satisfied with my Sigma. Hence I raised this thread.

      Kind regards.

Re: Sigma 10mm-20mm vs Canon 10mm-22mm

        Nathaniel,

At last got out and was able to try my new EFS 10-22mm, having moved from the Sigma 10-20mm.

What can I say. I think the Canon has a subtle edge to it but its very difficult to call. I'm pleased I took advantage of a great offer.

If I had to buy one of these at the full retail, I would be happy to save the money and go with the Siggy.
If I had both in the camera bag I'd use the Canon.

        What does that tell you?

I went for the Canon after a lot of consideration. The main advantage, if I recall correctly, being that it's somewhat lighter. The other decision maker was that we had friends visiting from Australia and they could buy it there for the same price as the Sigma was here. If you're buying new, the Canon is a little better, but if I had the Sigma already I wouldn't bother to trade up.

I tested them side-by-side many years ago. Felt the Sigma better built. IQ was much the same if I recall.

Choose the Sigma and no regrets ... until I go FF at some point ... then I'll be looking at 14L (I wish!).
