    New: Canon EF-S 10-18 f/4.5-5.6 IS STM

    Hi there,

Canon has introduced a new lens for the crop body's:

    EF-S 10-18 f/4.5-5.6 IS STM

Ans it is very sharp priced, it will be around 269 euro's.

I think it will be a good lens. Better than the EF-S 10-22?
    With kind regards,
    Friso

I doubt it, 4.5-5.6 against 3.5-4.5 for the 22. Sounds like a (significantly) lower priced lens and therefore reasonable to assume lower quality optics. Wide zoom for everyman as against the near-L of the bigger brother. Doesn't mean it won't be a good lens, but aimed at a different market sector.

Which market sector are you aiming at?

This lens has IS, your 10-22 has no IS.

True, but you've got to get some serious shaking going on to need IS at 10mm...

Can you hold a camera+lens complety still? ... without a little tremble or shake

What IS does in this case is allow you to use a smaller apeture if you need without encountering shake, which is very useful at times.
Please don't ask about my kit, it's embarrassing!

For the type of photography you're likely to use this sort of lens, I'd say generally yes. 1/10th sec reciprocal and if I'm going to want that slow or slower I'll be using a tripod or some sort of support.

I have deleted posts from this thread to remove a post which was in poor taste.

Whilst I concur that generally IS is somewhat unnecessary for UWA lenses, it can be useful for anyone using the cameras video features, and since this is a STM lens it's quite possible people will be using it for video. Also, the general reciprocal-rule quoted is "1/Focal Length or 1/60, whichever is greater" thus you're still limited (according to the reciprocal rule) to 1/60th and not 1/10th so the IS may we'll be useful.

Now that's something I didn't know and hadn't even considered. What a wonderfully informative place this forum is.
