Sigma 28mm-300mm f3.5-6.3 DG Canon FF fit- Advice required please

I recently bought,"for coppers", the Sigma 28-300mm DG lens as my travel lens and I accept that the picture quality will not be as good as my L lenses. However, this being a light lens I can easily cart it around. The only problem I have is that I am unable to move the zoom lock (to prevent lens creep) and it is more or less jam shut. I got the lens from a person who is not a photographer and has not used the lens at all. I took the lens out today to try it out on some birds and the IQ doesn't look too bad. I am posting two pictures just as a sample. I also noticed that the lens hunts to lock focus when I zoom to 300mm. I attached the lens to my 100D.

I would like to know whether I can use a little bit WD 40 on the switch to free it or should I contact Sigma.
    Many thanks for your advice.

    Nat

    Nat,

Don't put WD40 anywhere near the lens, apart from attacking the plastic it will soon spread to the optics internally no matter how sparing you are with it with the additional risk of getting onto the camera's sensor. It also dries/degrades to a sticky mess over time thereby negating it's "lubricating" properties.

Thanks Bill. Yes, I won't touch it! I have e-mailed Sigma and awaiting their reply. This not a very serious matter as I can live without it but all the same it would be nice if I can get that switch fixed.

Wise move Nat and it is only a zoom lock so not important.

Thanks Bill. I am wondering whether it is worth my while to get that fixed plus perhaps a service with Sigma, who have quoted me £89; the estimate could be less depending on the work involved. I am taking the opportunity of posting another shot taken with this lens so that members could consider the value for money of getting the switch fixed plus maybe a service!!!!! I might mention that all my present equipment are in excellent condition despite their usage as I have in mind the re-sale value of them when I decide to sell up due to "age". Hence this "stuck switch" on this lens somehow grates with me!!!!!!!!

Nat, it may be that the hunting is due to the lens being f6.3 at 300mm and your camera, the 100D, not being able to AF below f5.6. As I understand it, the Sigma lenses like this, and others, lie to the camera about the maximum aperture so when you get to the point where it becomes an f6.3 lens, you may see issues with AF.

My wife uses a Sigma 18-200 which is f6.3 at the long end and she sees quite a bit of hunting too...

Thanks very much Andy. Thats a great relief to know. Perhaps I will try this lens on my 6D and see what happens. This is a worrying aspect for me as I am so used to the focus being locked on very quickly with my other lenses inc the 70-200mm +1.4 combo. I will keep the members posted on this subject.

I think you may find the same problem on the 6D as, unless I misremember, it has the same AF limits as the 100D. Only the 7D2, 5D3 and some of the 1D range focus at f8...

Thanks again,Andy. What if I used manual mode and set the f @ 8?, auto ISO,auto WB and TV above 400 i.e above the focal length of the lens? I must experiment to get the hunting aspect sorted.

If I'm correct, it doesn't matter what you do. It's the maximum aperture that counts - all AF is done wide open then the lens stopped down for the shot. So the exposure mode in use doesn't make any difference.

I think it will work better in good light but from what I've read it's a physical limitation of the lens aperture and the AF system in the camera. The good news is that in good light it does seem to be less of a problem but in less than ideal light it becomes an issue.

I'd be interested to see Jeff's thoughts on this as he users a 150-600 on his 70D and that has the same setup as you're using.

i have no hunting problems at all with my 150-600 lens on the 70d andy ,but tbh its generations apart from what nat is using ,i did warn him that particular lens suffered from problems ,the one i had was kept for about a week and swiftly put back on e/bay .

nat i know you'll be reading this and imho the canon 55-250 i.s lens in any of its formats would have been far better for you ,i think there are various versions and even a brand new one wouldn't have broken the bank,CHEAP ,IMAGE STABILISED,FAST TO FOCUS,AND LIGHTWEIGHT .AND INCREDIBLY SHARP FOR ITS PRICE RANGE .

i have shouted to try to get it into your head before you waste any more money !!!!!!!!

Agree the sigma is a cheap lens and judging by the samples you have posted, a waste of money. I remember I also used to have the hunting problems with the 70-300 I had and also the tamron 28-300. Having it serviced by sigma is just throwing good money after bad - ditch it and take Jeffs advice and get a canon 55-200

Thanks Jeff and Stan for your advice. Most probably I will go in for the Canon 55-250mm lens for my light weight needs. The only downside is that I won't be able to use it on my 6D but my intentions were largely for use on my crop 100D. I was quite bothered with the hunting aspect of this lens as I am used to a quick focus lock with my present lenses. Problem solved for me!

Just thought I would let the members know esp Jeff and Stan, that I have bought a new canon 55-250mm STM lens. I have not been used to "hunting" problems before and this was the one factor which has made me sell the 28-300mm; also to save on repair costs.
