I've been going through this decision for months. Just ordered the Canon 300 F4 and 1.4x converter. The main competition was for me was the Sigma 300 F2.8 but decided to go this route and put the spare £500-odd towards a new camera. Just hope now that the 7D gets good reviews otherwise will have to wait and see whats next to appear....

Don't know about the 400mm but I have the 300mm + 1.4x and cannot recommend this combination highly enough!

Canon 300 F4 very difficult to track down at the mo. However, they have at least one at T4 Swindon. Last minute change of mind and I now have a Sigma 300 F2.8 coming tomorrow. No IS on it but will be used mainly on a monopod.

Might well have a 300F2.8 IS L canon for sale soon - still mulling it over. Will be in classifieds if I do

Hi

I photograph a lot of birds mainly on birding trips here and there, so need to balance out the watching kit with the photography gear.

I swaped out a 100-400 for a 300 F4 late last year and have never looked back. I have a 1.4x on as default, I find it a very capable and easy to manage when on walk about.

I'd recommend it to anyone who's mainly wildlifeing!

hi,

ive just bought the canon 300mm f4 IS lens, hopefully going out within the next couple of weeks to test it out fully, and then maybe buy the 1.4x extender if i find i need it
